The Story
OUTSTANDING BEAUTY Southover Place is set on the edge of the charming village of Burwash, within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This covers approximately 1,461 sq km of Sussex, Kent and Surrey, and still presents a very Medieval landscape, with wooded, rolling hills, irregular-shaped fields and ancient routeways. Within the landscape are small manor houses, castles and beautiful parks and gardens. There are footpaths to follow, bridleways to ride along, forests to cycle through and lakes and rivers to fish in. "This is a great place for just heading out with an Ordnance Survey map and enjoying a long country walk," he says. CHARMING VILLAGE Burwash itself is within walking distance of Southover Place. The village is known for its pretty, character properties, as well as its school, pubs, church and local shop. It is also home to Bateman's, a 17th century house, where author Rudyard Kipling, famous for novels including The Jungle Book and Kim, lived from 1902 to 1936. This is now owned by the National Trust and today visitors can appreciate Kipling's book-lined study, watch the watermill at work and wander through the gardens and estate. "There are lots of wonderful places to visit in this area, including some very good restaurants," John admits. LEISURE TIME The two-bedroom apartment is set with a character-filled building which is approximately 100 years old and was originally a seminary for an order of monks. Built around 1887, it used to have a church, where the car park is currently located, and has also been a boys' school in its past. Today it comprises 15 apartments, all of which have access to its leisure facilities. Those living at Southover Place and their guests can use its communal gym, swimming pool, sauna, snooker room, laundry room, tennis court and well-maintained grounds. "I used to enjoy playing tennis and swimming here," he recalls. "It was also nice for friends to be able to use the facilities if they stayed here from time to time." AN EXCELLENT ARRANGEMENT The apartment is accessed via a front door leading into the large reception room. This is spacious enough to be arranged with dining furniture as well as comfortable seating. "It was good to have the space to be able to entertain guests here," he observes. The drawing room opens into the compact kitchen, an arrangement which is also ideal for dinner parties. The bedroom and bathroom accommodation at the apartment comes off an inner passage. Here there is a master bedroom, with en suite bathroom, as well as a guest bedroom and bathroom. "The second bedroom could have another use if that suited someone else better but I have enjoyed having it for guests." EASY ACCESS The original layout of the apartment has worked well for John - the only thing he has really changed has been one of the bathroom spaces, which he reconfigured to allow for the addition of a washing machine. He has kept the property decorated in largely neutral shades and ensured everything is well maintained. The position of Southover Place has made it easy for John and his guests to reach. Travelling to and from London has been quick by road or by rail, and it is also well-positioned for Tunbridge Wells and the south coast. "I have enjoyed my time here and am only moving now as I am semi-retired and have a permanent home close by so no longer really need somewhere else to come during my time off," he says. "I have lots of happy memories of the past 30 years at Southover Place, however, and have enjoyed being able to spend so much time close to such beautiful countryside."
Setting The Scene
Looking out from his top floor apartment, the Rev John Hine enjoys the far-reaching views out across the picturesque countryside. His home at Southover Place is located in a stunning area, which offers great tranquillity and takes in glorious vistas out across the beautiful Sussex Weald. "The position of the apartment was one of the main attractions for me - this is a very beautiful part of the world," he says. "I was working in London at the time and it was nice to be able to come down here on my days off to play golf, relax and enjoy these wonderful surroundings."
