3 Bedroom semi-detached house New Road, Ascot £550,000

Three Bedroom Semi Detached Character House.

Basking by a crackling open fire, Michael and Joanna Lewin still savour the ambiance of their Ascot home as much as they did when they first saw it some six years ago. The handsome, red-brick, semi-detached cottage dates back to 1896 and still retains much of its original charm. “We wanted a Victorian house with character,” Michael recalls. “We both remember coming into the drawing room for the very first time and being drawn to the lovely large fireplace and brick chimney breast. Since moving in, this has been something we have loved most about the house because it warms the whole place up. We have had some wonderful Christmases in this room, with everyone gathered around a roaring fire and a tree in our big bay window.”

FAMILY LIVING
Set back from the road and with off-street parking for up to two cars, the attractive house has been a superb family home. “We also liked the fact it had an upstairs bathroom and a good-sized garden, with space for relaxing, entertaining and children to play,” he remembers. Since then, the couple have made the three-bedroom property their own, completely redecorating throughout, as well as replacing the bathroom and recarpeting. “It has been a very comfortable place to live and we have been very happy here,” he adds.

INVITING SPACES
Entered from the side, the welcoming house has a small hall leading to the drawing room and dining room. The drawing room sits at the front of the home and is a great place to relax in the evening as well as to entertain. “This is where we come to sit on the sofa and watch television,” he says. “The dining room is a nice size, with plenty of room for socialising with friends around the table. We also have space in here for a desk, which is great for working from home.” Beyond the dining room is the kitchen, which has a door out on to the garden. “There could be potential here for someone else to extend or open up the back of the house, as some of our neighbours have done. Subject to the relevant planning permissions, new owners could add bi-folding doors on to the garden as well.”

GREAT SCOPE
All three bedrooms and the family bathroom are upstairs at the New Road house. The master bedroom sits above the drawing room. “This is a lovely room with more than enough space for our large Victorian pine wardrobe, as well as the double bed,” Michael explains. “The bedroom at the back of the house has been ideal for our daughter and then we have been able to use the third bedroom as her playroom or as a study.” There could be scope, he continues, for converting the attic space at the property (again subject to the relevant planning permissions). “We have looked into it and believe there could be space up in the loft for two rooms.”

PRETTY GARDEN
One of the other great pleasures of life at the house has been the garden, Michael admits: “We have carried out a lot of work here and turned it into a quintessential English country garden, with apple trees, a vegetable plot and even room to keep chickens. There is a nice big lawn for our daughter to play on and we have a good-sized terrace for eating outside and hosting barbecues. We have had some wonderful garden parties outside for my wife’s birthday in July and fireworks’ nights in November.”

COUNTRY LIVING
When the weather is fine, the family enjoys heading off to one of the many parks or green open spaces in the area. “We love going to Windsor Great Park and are also lucky enough to be close to golf courses you can walk round and local ponds,” Shopping trips take place to Windsor, as well as to the new Lexicon centre in Bracknell, and, of course, it is very easy to travel into London by rail or road. “One of the great beauties of living here is that we are close to everything we need yet still enjoy a sense of country living,” he agrees. “We will miss all the character of the house when we leave but plan to stay close by as we enjoy being in this area so much.”
