4 Bedroom detached house Layer Road, Abberton £725,000

With stunning rural views and a beautiful English country garden, Abberton Copse has been the perfect place for an artist to be inspired

From Abberton Copse, the current owner looks out over lush green fields of sheep and beautiful mature woodland. She moved to her unique home approximately 30 years ago, having been attracted to its idyllic position. “The location was perfect for me,” she recalls. “I loved the scope held by the garden at the time and the views out towards Friday Woods and over the rolling countryside.” As an artist, she knew she would have the space and tranquillity to concentrate on her work. “It has been a wonderful place to live because it is so quiet and secluded as well as being so close to the coast yet at the same time it is quick to get into Colchester and has easy access to London,” she adds.

Believed to date back to late Georgian or early Victorian times, the property was once the coach house to the neighbouring manor. “It had already been converted when I bought it but I went on to extend it myself,” she explains. “I added a new wing, with a drawing room downstairs and a bedroom and bathroom upstairs, and I converted an outbuilding into a breakfast room. This is a colourful room – a lovely light space, which has also been the perfect place for me to paint.”

The pretty home is entered via a large reception hall, which leads into the spacious drawing room to the right. This has two sets of French doors into the exquisite garden. An attractive fireplace is the focal point of the room. There is a ground floor cloakroom and a family room or dining room, with additional French doors. The kitchen is at the back of the house and leads through into the breakfast room/studio. Another generous room, this has a triple aspect, skylight windows, direct access to the garden and one of the patios as well as a pantry. “Inside, the house has a charming cottage style,” she explains. “Much of it has recently been redecorated.”

There are four bedrooms upstairs at Abberton Copse. The largest of these is the master bedroom, which has fitted wardrobes, dual aspect and access to one of the bathrooms. “This is a very pretty room, with wonderful views to the front and back. It is lovely to wake up in here to the sight of the fields and the trees.” Three other beautiful bedrooms, one of which could make a superb study or nursery, share the family shower room. “There has always been plenty of space here for me and my family but there could be scope to increase the accommodation should someone else wish to,” she adds. “There is a detached double garage and a barn which (subject to the relevant planning permissions) could possibly hold scope to be converted or modernised for alternative use.”

Indeed, Abberton Copse has been a fabulous place to live and a great home in which to welcome family and friends. It has been the backdrop to numerous occasions and celebrations throughout the years, she says. “There have been many family parties, with children enjoying Easter egg hunts through the wooded copse, playing football and having hose fights! With 2 patio areas, the garden is also a tranquil place for adults to sit and chat.”

When not gardening or painting, the owner has enjoyed strolling over to Friday Woods, where there are wonderful walks and there is an abundance of wildlife to spot. Mersea Island is another favourite, especially when members of the family visit. “This is popular with those who enjoy sailing and is great for spending time on the beach and enjoying fresh seafood,” she says. “Abberton Reservoir, with a visitor centre and bird sanctuary, is another scenic place to go walking or cycling.” The Reservoir, a wetland site of international importance, is home to some 40,000 water fowl every year and it is magical to watch migrating birds fly directly over the property. “It has been wonderful to have all these places close by, as well as Colchester with its shops, historical sites and leisure facilities. You can catch a train into London too if you want to go to the thea
