The house on Cambridge Road at Stretham has been an outstanding family home and a great place from which to enjoy good access to both Ely and Cambridge

The past four decades at the house on Cambridge Road have brought nothing but joy for the current owners of the Stretham property. The house, which dates back to 1938 and offers generous accommodation, was exactly what they were looking for 40 years ago, one of them recalls. "We wanted somewhere suitable to bring up our young family," she remembers. "We were bowled over by this house, which offered very nice-sized rooms and had a large garden. It was exactly what we were looking for." The couple were also won over by its excellent position. "We knew it would be ideal because it was in a quiet village and yet was also within very easy reach of Cambridge."

The house on Cambridge Road enjoys generous gardens to both the front and rear. It is accessed via a gate and driveway, providing plenty of space for off-road parking. There is also an integral garage. At the back, the garden offers great privacy. There is a terrace for outside dining and entertaining, as well as stretches of lawn. This has scope for landscaping should new owners wish to make their own mark on the grounds.
Set back from the road, with a generous front garden and driveway, the detached house has been well maintained by the couple over the years. "We have made a few changes," she observes. "We rearranged the ground floor accommodation slightly, for example, knocking through to make the kitchen larger." Today, the property is entered via the large reception hall, which gives on to the drawing room to the left and the family room to the right. Both these rooms benefit from beautiful bay windows. The drawing room leads into the study while the family room opens into the kitchen breakfast room. There is also a downstairs cloakroom and a pantry. "The whole house is very bright, and we have enhanced this by keeping the décor quite light," she adds.
Upstairs, the airy feel continues, with all four bedrooms coming off a spacious galleried landing. Two of the rooms have large bay windows. The family bathroom is also at this level. "The space here was ideal for family living when the children were younger: now they are older but there is still room to accommodate guests in comfort," she says. The house offers great versatility, she points out. Reception rooms can be arranged as relaxation, work or children's spaces as required. "Having two big living rooms is ideal if you have a family as the adults can be in one space talking and the children in another watching television or playing games," she adds. "Then we also have the study and the dining room."
Family meals are taken in the dining room or in the kitchen, where there is a breakfast bar. In the summer, the generous garden comes into its own and the family often sit out in the sunshine to enjoy long lunches or barbecues. "We have always kept the garden quite open to ensure there is plenty of space for children to run around and play games," she says. "The terrace is a good size, with ample room for tables and chairs, as well as other garden furniture."
The peaceful location is ideal for anyone who enjoys getting out and about in the countryside. The picturesque Fens offer miles of footpaths and beautiful places to explore. The famously flat area of 400,000 hectares, stretches from Lincoln and Boston in the North, Cambridge to the South and Peterborough to the West, and is renowned for its wildlife. "This is also a wonderful area for cycling," the owner suggests. "From here there are lots of lovely places to visit, including Stretham pump." This interesting building is the last survivor in the southern Fenland of over 100 steam-powered pumping stations used for fen drainage in the 19th and early 20th centuries. She adds: "There is also a golf course close by for those who like to play."
The city of Cambridge is just 20 minutes' drive from the house. Here there are some excellent shopping centres, as well as restaurants, cafés, theatres and leisure facilities. The city is famed for its university, which includes the colleges of King's, known for its choir and towering Gothic chapel; Trinity, founded by Henry VIII; and St John's, with its 16th century gate. "We also like to visit Ely, which is close by too," she admits. "This is a quieter market town, which is known for its beautiful cathedral and also has some lovely shops." The owners will miss their spacious home and its location when they leave. "We have been very happy here," she adds. "We know it will be very difficult to find anywhere that is in any way comparable to this house."
Stretham offers village amenities including a post office, convenience store, church and public houses, there is a regular bus service to Cambridge and Ely with transport links to Kings Cross in under an hour.
