4 Bedroom detached house Lynmouth Crescent, Milton Keynes £685,000

The unique house on Lynmouth Crescent was influenced by homes in Australia and America and was designed to offer some very special lifestyle touches

Relaxing on their splendid veranda, looking out over their beautiful garden, the owners of the individual house on Lynmouth Crescent are proud of all they have achieved here. The couple designed and built the attractive home some 20 years ago and are as pleased with it today as they were when it was first completed. “We decided on Milton Keynes because it was such a convenient place to live and there was plenty of land for self-building at the time,” one of them recalls. “We are Australian and it also reminded us of Melbourne!” The location of the plot was particularly appealing, the other owner adds. “It was in a really lovely area, close to Furzton Lake and the linear park. It was a good size, giving us a large garden and allowing us to build and position the house as we wanted to.”

Having travelled extensively, the couple drew inspiration from homes they had visited across the world. “We wanted it to include features we had enjoyed in Dallas, Texas, for example, as well as in Australia,” he explains. “It had to be light and open, and we wanted a large veranda and an area of decking at the back to allow us to be able to entertain outside and have barbecues all year round.” The design and build went well and the property has been a magnificent home since then. “It has been perfect for us – we are only leaving now because we are relocating back to Australia,” he adds. “Subject to the relevant planning permissions, there is still ample space to extend or to remodel should new owners wish to change it at all to suit their own requirements, however.”
The impressive, four-bedroom house offers a blend of the traditional and the contemporary. It is homely and inviting yet includes features such as a large family bathroom with and double hand basins; a built-in vacuum system, a heat recovery/ventilation system as well as under-floor heating upstairs and downstairs. “We first experienced under-floor heating in Scandinavia and loved it. Even when our girls had left home they would still return with their friends and we would find them all sitting on the warm floor!” The house has provided great flexibility over the years. The spacious galleried landing upstairs, for example, has been an excellent place to relax, read or work. “The fourth bedroom has been ideal as my sewing room,” she adds. “My husband is a keen photographer and can be in the study working while I am busy in my sewing room.”
The country-style kitchen has been a superb family space while the main drawing room is ideal for entertaining. “We have French windows from the kitchen and the drawing room on to the deck, which runs all the way along the back of the house. We have had so many wonderful occasions here with family and friends over the years, when people have been able to wander in and out,” she says. “Then we have the snug at the front of the house, which is a nice quiet room in which to read or listen to music. This catches the late afternoon sun for most of the year.” She adds: “It was always good to have this extra space for us to use when the girls had their friends here.”
The garden at the Lynmouth Crescent house has matured beautifully over the past 20 years. It has been carefully landscaped and cultivated by the couple to offer immaculate areas for ornamental enjoyment, as well as for sitting out in the sunshine. “It is a very private garden, with lots of different shrubs, plants and seating areas,” he says. They have also enjoyed their proximity to green areas – being able to stroll or cycle through the park and round the lake. This is home to geese and other waterfowl. “There are many nice places to walk close by,” he says.
The location has also provided exceptional convenience to central Milton Keynes, with its array of shopping and leisure facilities. Supermarkets, schools and local amenities are also within very easy reach. “The rail links to London from Milton Keynes are very good and we enjoy good access to the A5 and M1,” he says. “We have always found it very easy to travel to other parts of the country when we have needed to.” They admit they will miss their fabulous home and all its unique features when they leave, as well as Milton Keynes itself. “We have lots of happy memories of our time here, watching the girls grow up and entertaining friends,” she says. “We will be sad to be moving, as we designed everything in this home, and planted every tree and shrub in the garden.”
The detached house sits comfortably within its grounds, offering ample space to the front to park several vehicles. There is also a double garage. To the rear, the house opens on to an expansive covered veranda, with very generous space for outside relaxation and entertaining. The garden itself is immaculate, with elegant sections of lawn, as well as neat beds and additional seating areas.
