4 Bedroom detached house Newport Road, Woolstone £500,000

With its village setting and excellent access to all the many benefits of Milton Keynes, the property on Newport Road has it all

Sitting out in their garden on Newport Road, Gareth and Lauren find it hard to believe just how close they are to the shops, leisure facilities and transport connections of Milton Keynes. Set in Woolstone, where the historic villages of Great Woolstone and Little Woolstone were once situated, the location still has a very traditional feel, Gareth explains. “This is a perfect place to live because it is so tranquil. We are close to the park and the canal and just five minutes’ walk from Willen Lake and some good local pubs. Yet at the same time, we are also just five minutes from the centre of Milton Keynes and from the motorway.”

It was some 16 years ago now that he first came across the spacious property, which sits on an attractive corner plot. “By the time I first saw it I had already viewed approximately 50 different houses and just could not find anything I liked,” he recalls. “I remember walking in through the door here, however, and immediately experiencing a feeling of peace. As soon as I came in, I knew I had found the right place. It was superb: I loved the fact it was detached and in a setting that was quiet yet convenient. It was absolutely perfect in every way – and the rest is history!”
Believed to date back to the early 1980s, the property had just three bedrooms at the time. “The previous owners had plans drawn up and we went on to complete some of the work ourselves,” he says. “This included adding a fourth bedroom by building out over the drawing room, which was originally single storey. Planning permission is still in place to extend out over the garage. If new owners wished to consider doing this, they could have a fifth bedroom or create a huge master bedroom, complete with en suite bathroom.”
Other work has seen the couple remove a wall to create a fabulous, open-plan kitchen dining room. “We can now sit and eat by the beautiful arched window,” he says. They have also upgraded windows and refreshed the bathroom and the kitchen. “We had new oak work surfaces added and painted the cupboards in a country cream shade.” The whole house now has a stylish interior finish, with a subtle colour scheme complementing natural wood. “We have redecorated the kitchen dining room, with Farrow & Ball paper on a feature wall, and have used a hand-painted paper on one wall in the drawing room,” he adds. “The bathroom is modern but still maintains a traditional edge, with some fittings from a heritage range.”
The property has been a superb place in which to celebrate special occasions and welcome family and friends. The bedrooms, including the master, which has a higher ceiling, are all comfortable and inviting. The living spaces are bright and airy and flow easily on to the south facing garden. “We have landscaped the garden to make it low maintenance and added an area of raised decking, which has been great for sitting out as well as for entertaining as it gets the sun for most of the day. This is very much a party house and we have held a big party here most years for our birthdays, which are close together in May. We have about 80 to 100 guests wandering between the house and south facing garden and often had bands and DJs performing, using the raised area as a mini stage.”
On sunny days, the couple have savored walking by the canal or lake or wandering over to one of the renowned pubs that are close by and serve good food. “We have really enjoyed living somewhere which has everything within walking distance,” Gareth admits. They have found it easy to travel into work and to London, thanks to the great road and rail connections, and have enjoyed being able to reach airports to travel abroad as necessary. “We will really miss this area as much as the house when we move,” he agrees. “We are relocating now for reasons of work and are very sad to be going. We have loved living somewhere that feels like a village but is so convenient. Really, this house could not be in a better position.”
