MOUNTAIN VIEWS Indeed, from The Gate House, the owners can see the Sugar Loaf and other Black Mountains. "This land was apparently once part of the manor owned by the lords who ran the north-west corner of the Forest of Dean," he explains. "It is said to have been offered to the Duke of Wellington when he returned from the Napoleonic Wars but he turned it down because the views reminded him so much of the Pyrenees." Believed to date back to the 14th or 15th century, the exquisite stone property was built as a gate house and manor house and once formed part of a working farm. "All the properties here that were once former manorial or farm buildings now form a small enclave, where everyone enjoys their privacy yet there are other people close by if you need them." A BEAUTIFUL BLEND The attractive house offers a beautiful blend of character features and modern comfort. "We were very lucky that we were able to influence the interior finish by becoming involved in the process before the property was complete," he explains. "We chose the kitchen and bathrooms we wanted and watched it all coming together." The kitchen, for example, manages to be both classic and contemporary, with its stone floor, wooden and slate work surfaces and Aga set in a stone inglenook fireplace. Many of the rooms have period fireplaces dating back to different times in the property's past; there are areas of exposed stone and woodwork, and walls have been painted white to enhance the natural light and contrast with the beautiful character features. "It all ties together very well," he adds. THE HEART OF THE HOME The Gate House is entered via a reception hall, which leads into all the main living spaces. To the left is the kitchen breakfast room, where there is ample space for a table and chairs. "This is absolutely the heart of the home for us," he says. "It leads through into the drawing room, where we have the wood-burning stove. In the winter, the whole house, which has under-floor heating, always feels very warm and welcoming." Double doors from the drawing room lead through into the spacious family room or second sitting/ dining room which has French windows on to the garden. "In the summer, this house is always filled with sunlight and yet remains cool." AMAZING BEDROOM The
