5 Bedroom detached house Portskewett, Monmouthshire £685,000

Oaklee is a simply splendid home, designed to offer a high level of comfort, as well as all the flexibility required for both family living and entertaining.

From fabulous parties in the magnificent games room to lively Christmases around a roaring wood-burner, Oaklee will offer nothing but joy to its next owners. The substantial modern home, which sits comfortably in its attractive gardens, was designed and built by its current owners some 20 years ago. "We chose this plot because it was set on a quiet cul-de-sac, in a good location for a family. Our three children went on to attend the very sought-after village school and, although the setting feels very rural and private, it is actually very well positioned for reaching motorways and travelling to other parts of the country," one of them explains. "Our aim with the house was to build our perfect family home and over the years we have gone on to extend and enhance it further."

The Story
AN INVITING HOME The striking house offers extensive living space. "We wanted lots of different living areas," she continues. "Although you could make some areas of the house more open-plan if you wished, we like being able to use separate rooms for different purposes. We love being able to close the door and light the wood-burner in the drawing room in the winter months, for example, as it becomes so cosy and inviting." There are rooms that can be used as work areas or for children to be able to have their own spaces for spending time with their friends. "In the summer, I love being in the sun room at the back of the house, which is just lovely as it opens on to the terrace and garden." IMPRESSIVE GAMES ROOM Oaklee is entered via a bright, inviting reception hall, featuring an elegant staircase leading up to a galleried landing. To the left of the hall, double doors open into the drawing room, while a single door leads into the kitchen, which in turn gives on to a snug, as well as a utility room and then cloakroom. Also leading off the hall are an office and the family room: the family room then leads into the bright sun room. Two bedrooms and a family bathroom are also conveniently at this level, as well as the impressive games room, with its beautiful wooden floor and doors on to the garden. "This is an amazing room for entertaining as it is so spacious and includes a bar built by my husband - you could host some incredible parties and events in here. Equally, new owners could use it for another purpose if they wished. Subject to the relevant planning permissions, for example, it could even possibly be converted into a self-contained annexe." AMAZING SPACE Much of the bedroom and bathroom accommodation fans off the galleried landing on the first floor. Here there are four bedrooms and a family bathroom: one of the bedrooms also benefits from an en suite bathroom. A separate staircase from the ground floor of the new section of the house, where the games room is situated, leads up to a separate, splendid master suite, complete with a vaulted ceiling, dressing room and access on to a private balcony. "This is a beautiful bedroom, which is so spacious," she adds. OUTDOOR LIVING Above the garage is yet another room, which could also have a variety of uses. "This is a very flexible house, which can be adapted as your needs change," she suggests. When the weather is warm, the garden becomes something of an extension to the house. Meals are enjoyed out on the terrace or decking and there is ample space for children to play. "We have also loved having space for a trampoline and the hot tub, which is housed in a pergola." Children's birthday parties have been held out on the lawn and adults have relished being able to relax out in the sunshine. "It is very tranquil out here," she observes. NATURAL BEAUTY Portskewett is well located for access to the M4 and M48 motorways. "We have lots of relatives in England so have enjoyed being close to the Severn crossing," the owner says. Newport, Cardiff and Bristol are all within easy reach, as is the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its magnificent forests, superb walks and picturesque river. "Portskewett itself is a lovely place to live," she adds. "It is a very friendly village, with a local pub and shop, as well as the school, and lots of nice places to walk. We hope to stay close by when we move but will miss this house itself and its very peaceful setting."
