WOODLAND WONDER
Set back from the road, with wrought-iron gates and an impressive frontage, Harwil was built in 1958 on land with mature trees that was once part of Howards Wood. The current owners bought the house in 1996 and 10 years later carried out the major extension and remodelling work to make it what it is today. Bathrooms and the kitchen were also replaced and the whole house was remodelled into a contemporary stylish living space. “The work allowed us to create an additional reception room downstairs and an annexe, with its own bedroom, bathroom and dressing upstairs,” she explains. “This has been ideal for a nanny in the past as she has been able to have her own space, with a separate staircase. It is also fantastic for guests.”
SPACE AND LIGHT
Throughout the entire house there is a feeling of space: the property is light and airy yet also presents an inviting ambiance. At ground floor level, the light oak flooring and the welcoming reception hall opens into the spectacular drawing room to the right. This dual aspect room has two sets of French windows on to the terrace and an eye-catching contemporary fire. There is a ground floor cloakroom, dining and study, which has been fitted out with beautiful, his-and-hers Neville Johnson furniture, and then the spectacular kitchen breakfast, with its orangery-style roof light and bi-folding doors. The kitchen breakfast room opens into the vaulted ceilinged family room, where more doors can be pulled back on to the garden. “There is so much space,” she admits. “It is fabulous for entertaining, especially in the summer, when the doors can be folded right back.”
FAMILY TIMES
The stunning family room features lighting by John Cullen of the King’s Road, Chelsea. The kitchen, which also has Lutron multi scene auto dimmable controlled mood lighting, was designed by a local kitchen designer in a chic contemporary style. It includes exquisite, ivory high gloss units, a magnificent central island, dark Silestone work surfaces and Miele appliances. There is also ample space for a large dining table and chairs. “This is the hub of the house for us as a family and is where we spend most of our time,” she says. “It is nice to be able to wander through to the family room to watch television or listen to music. We have ceiling speakers and a system to allow music to be played throughout much of the house as well as Crestron control of lighting and entertainment.”
SUMPTUOUS SUITE
The first floor of Harwil currently features four bedrooms. The sumptuous master suite includes a magnificent dressing room, which has been fully fitted out by Hammonds, and an en suite bathroom; three more bedrooms share the family bathroom. “The master bedroom is a beautiful relaxing space, which is exceptionally light as it is double aspect,” she says. Although Harwil is beautifully finished as it is, subject to the relevant planning permissions it could be taken further. There could be scope to extend out from the annexe to create an extra bedroom, to create additional bedroom and bathroom space in the loft or even to build an annexe in the grounds. “This is such a large plot that there is the potential to create a fantastic multi-generational home here,” she observes. “It might also be possible to add a conservatory.”
SHEER PERFECTION
Relaxing at the back of the house and watching the birds in the trees, it is hard to believe just how well situated Harwil is. “It is a quiet cul-de-sac, yet it is so easy to travel into London for work from here, and to reach the airports,” she says. “It is also close to shops and a wide choice of excellent schools, as well as places such as Black Park to go walking, cycling and running. This is a very attractive area and yet it is also very convenient – this house is perfect for a family, great for entertaining and ideal if you need to travel.”
SETTING THE SCENE
The parkland-style grounds of Harwil have given the current owners great pleasure. To the front of the house, electronically operated double gates give access to a secured driveway, where there is ample parking and secure gated access to the rear. The house opens beautifully on to its terraced areas and leafy gardens. There is a large entertainment deck, as well as areas of lawn, trees and shrubs. As well as the double garage, the grounds include an outbuilding for further storage. There is also power and drainage for a swimming pool should new owners wish to consider installing one.
