5 Bedroom detached house Blind Lane, LAYER MARNEY £975,000

Set down a quiet lane and surrounded by spectacular countryside, Clarkes is a beautiful, stylish and very spacious home, which nestles in a world of its own

Strolling across their immaculate gardens of approximately an acre, Shane and Galina Clarke can walk straight through into mature woodland. Here they spot all kinds of wildlife, from a glorious spectrum of birds through to deer, badgers and squirrels. Their elegant, executive home nestles in an idyllic location, surrounded by picturesque fields and woodland, yet is also within easy reach of Colchester, Chelmsford and even London. “It was the setting that first attracted us,” Shane admits. “We are situated down a quiet lane in the beautiful village of Layer Marney, just a mile from the famous tower, and with wonderful views in every direction. We have no direct neighbours but are next to a large carp pond, with ducks on it. It is incredible to live somewhere like this and also to be able to commute into London for work so easily.”

EXQUISITE INTERIOR

The Tudor palace of Layer Marney Tower is something of a landmark in this quiet corner of Essex and the house itself has architectural merit. Designed and built some 12 years ago by a renowned, local company, with a reputation for its exclusive homes, it has a traditional, external style which blends beautifully into its surroundings. Inside, it has been updated by Shane and Galina to present elegant interiors and luxurious living spaces. “We had bespoke, solid oak furniture – including cabinets and radiator covers – fitted throughout and travertine flooring laid downstairs,” he explains. “All the bathrooms have been replaced and now have Aqualisa showers and Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware; all the lighting in the house has been changed to LED downlighters.”

COMFORTABLE LIVING

Attractive Clarkes offers bright, well-proportioned accommodation throughout. A large reception hall, with access to a cloakroom and large walk-in cupboard, leads to all the main living spaces. To one side is the study and then the drawing room, with its French windows on to the garden. “Both these rooms have beautiful built-in cabinets,” Shane observes. Also opening on to the garden are the family room or snug and the dining room. The dining room leads through into the kitchen breakfast room, which in turn opens into the utility room. “The kitchen and the utility room have both been fitted out with solid oak cupboards and granite work surfaces – the kitchen also has a useful central island.”

ALL SEASONS

The kitchen breakfast room and dining room area are very much the hub of the home and, with French windows on to the Indian sandstone terrace surrounding the house, there are also superb opportunities for indoor-outdoor living. “It has been great having the three large rooms at the back of the house to spread out into and to provide an easy flow into the garden,” Shane admits. “These sizeable rooms offer the flexibility to be arranged to suit the needs of whoever is living here. This is a fantastic place to entertain because of all the space and it is comfortable to live in all year round because it is warm in winter and cool in summer.”

SUMPTUOUS SPACE

All five sumptuous bedrooms at Clarkes are situated on the first floor of the house, where they take in scenic views out across the garden and surrounding countryside. The master bedroom has fitted wardrobes and an en suite bathroom while one of the guest rooms has an en suite shower room. The remaining three bedrooms all share the family bathroom. “The master bedroom features a designer wallpaper and the room we use as a dressing room has bespoke cupboards and a damask wallpaper.” There is such a sense of space at Clarkes. The attic has been boarded out to offer excellent storage and there is a summer house in the garden, which could have a variety of uses. “There is also planning permission in place for an orangery to be added along the whole back of the house, should someone wish to do so,” he adds.
