5 Bedroom detached house Mill Rd, Marlow £1,400,000

5 Bedroom Family home in Central Marlow

The substantial family home on Mill Road is set in a sought-after corner of Marlow, just a short stroll from the centre of town and the beautiful River Thames.

Dating back to 1945, the property is believed to have been built by people moving out from London to escape the Blitz. Over the years the current owners have lived here they have not only renovated and updated it but also extended it out further to the rear to create the self-contained living space. "The annexe did have a bedroom, bathroom, hallway and kitchen living room," she explains. "At the moment we use it as a gym, but it could have all sorts of uses. It could become an annexe for relative once again or could be suitable as guest accommodation or an office." Other work to the property has seen them create a new kitchen breakfast room, complete with Rayburn oven; enlarge and replace the main bathroom, and create a porch. In addition, they had beautiful American oak laid in the drawing and dining room and boarded out the loft for storage. "Subject to the relevant planning permissions, there could be scope for someone to convert this."

The family home is set in approximately one-third of an acre of mature gardens. To the front of the property is a driveway and leafy garden. To the rear, the house looks out over lawn and leafy shrubs and trees. There are areas for outside dining and relaxation, and there is ample space for growing fruit and vegetables.

Generous Space
The entire house has been an exceptional place to live, they agree. "We brought our two sons up here and they each had a good-sized room, with space for a captain's bed, with built-in storage, a desk and a wardrobe. Three of the bedrooms in the house have wash basins, which is very useful." There has always been ample space for everyone to spread out, gather together or enjoy their privacy at different times of the day. "We have a family room, where you can go and flop in front of the television on the sofa," she says. "We often find ourselves in here in the evening. Most days, however, we also go into the drawing room, as the sun streams in here in the afternoon and it is nice to light the fire in the winter."
All Seasons
Casual meals are enjoyed in the breakfast room, while the dining area comes into its own on special occasions. "It is very useful to have two dining spaces and two sitting rooms when you have a growing family." The property, which sits comfortably within its mature grounds, has also been perfect for entertaining, he explains. "We have had lots of large parties here, often with up to 40 people in the house. In the summer months, people spill out into the garden, which is just gorgeous. We have a big table out there for people to sit around."
Mature Garden
The glorious garden offers great privacy and provides lots of places for sitting out in the sunshine or the shade; there are apple, pear, plum, cherry and greengage trees, and in spring and summer the beds are a riot of colour. "It is very quiet here and we see lots of birds," she adds. "We like to have breakfast out here whenever the weather permits." Christmases are also always a wonderful time at the house. "We can accommodate a lot of people and the house looks fantastic with a big tree, the open fire and a swag across the fireplace." Throughout the year, however, the home has been filled with family and friends. "Our eldest son was married here, and we had all the chaps staying with us - in fact, we got used to our boys often bringing friends home with them when they came back to stay." Happy Days
The couple, who are relocating, admit they will miss their surrounding as much as their home when they leave. "We are just five minutes from Marlow Lock and the Thames Path, where we love to walk," she says. "We can follow it all the way to Cookham or Henley." They have enjoyed their proximity to many good schools, excellent restaurants and fine shops. Access to main roads and motorways is also quick, allowing them to travel into London and across the country very easily. "We will miss this convenience, as well as the space and the garden when we go," they agree. "This has been an amazing place to live and we have been very happy here."
