Relaxing in the conservatory at the beautiful house that has been their home for the past 40 years, the owners reflect on just how versatile the generous property has been for them over the decades. They bought the detached house when it was newly built and since then have gone on to remodel, extend and update it to meet their own needs and those of their children and grandchildren. “This has been a wonderful home to us,” one of them explains. “It is a lovely place to live, with space for children to play inside and out and provides areas for home working if you wish. There could be potential to turn part of the property into a self-contained annexe (STPP) for extended family members and there is scope to create a games room or a gym.”

A PERFECT BALANCE
It was the unique combination of location, space and external appearance that first enticed the couple. “We loved Great Linford because it was within easy reach of everything Milton Keynes had to offer yet was also very leafy and still had that historic, village appeal with village green and hall, cricket club, tennis courts and public house. Here we found the best of both worlds with one foot in the country and the other in an exciting new town,” she recalls. “The house was pretty and was set on a welcoming cul-de-sac. Inside, it had a large L-shaped room, where we frequently entertained when we first moved in.” Following the arrival of their children, however, they decided to remodel the expansive open reception space to create a corridor, dining room and drawing room. “We also built a playroom behind the garage and a hardwood conservatory on to the drawing room,” she adds.
BEAUTIFUL BEDROOMS
Approximately 20 years ago, another major extension to the property was carried out, transforming the former four-bedroom family home into a substantial, five-bedroom property, complete with new master bedroom, dressing area and en suite. “This is a large bedroom with arch through to dressing area and door to a spacious bathroom, with slipper bath and shower cubicle,” she says. “We also enlarged the en suite shower room to the previous master bedroom and use this as our guest bedroom.” The remaining three bedrooms share the family bathroom. “One of these bedrooms is currently used as my office,” the owner adds.
LEISURE AND WORK SPACE
The playroom was later divided to create a music room or study and a utility room. The double garage, which has a cavity wall and carpeted floor, has been used for the owners’ business in the past and could have a variety of potential future uses. “There is also a workshop here,” she explains. “But it would be very easy for someone to convert the space back into a garage if preferred.”
FAMILY LIVING
Elsewhere in the house, there is also scope for remodelling, should new owners wish it. The family have enjoyed having a separate drawing room, dining room, kitchen, breakfast room and conservatory, but appreciate other people may wish to open up certain rooms to allow for the creation of one modern kitchen, dining and living space. “There are many options available,” she observes. “We have changed it as we have needed to and have always found it an easy place to live in. It has been perfect for daily family life, as well as for special occasions. We have hosted the full range of family and friends’ celebrations here in the house and the garden and have created a treasure trove of memories.”
COUNTRY WALKS
The Great Linford location has also been conducive to family life. It has been so easy to access shops, supermarkets and schools, as well as transport links and leisure facilities. “We have enjoyed a wide variety of walks and cycle rides, with lakes, a river, parks and areas of the countryside close by,” she says. “The A5 and M1 and two train stations are 10-15 minutes away.” The area has a strong community spirit and has always felt like a safe neighbourhood, she adds. “We will miss it when we leave,” the owner acknowledges. “It is part of our DNA, but this is the right time for us to move on to something different. We have done everything we wanted to do with this house, and it is now time for someone else to move in and make it their own.”
