Whenever people visit the house at Firgrove for the very first time, they never fail to be amazed. The current owners explain their Twyford home, which is set on a private cul-de-sac, is much larger than visitors ever realise. "Every room in this house is a good size," one of them explains. "People like the area and the setting; then they come in and comment on how lovely and spacious it is inside." The generous proportions of the five-bedroom house appealed to the couple as soon as they saw it, adds the other owner. "We liked the fact it was so spacious and that so much consideration had gone into the practical features here too. The people who built it knew it would be their home and so every last detail was considered," he adds. "We also loved the fact it was part of a very small, gated community and felt very private."


Dating back to 1999, the house was one of two homes to be built in the grounds of another large property. "This is a very green area: we are surrounded by woodland," he explains. The couple have enhanced the house in the time they have been here, installing decking out in the garden and reconfiguring the first floor to open up the master bedroom. Interior design was completed to a high specification, with top quality lighting and intricate detailing in features such as the coving. "We also opened up the reception space on the ground floor, replaced a bathroom and had new wooden flooring laid," he adds. "The house does now have a bright, modern feel throughout."


The handsome home is entered via an impressive entrance hall leading to all the main living areas. A door leads through into the family room, which in turn opens into the capacious drawing room, with its under-floor heating and French windows on to the garden. "This is a lovely room, with a beautiful fireplace, and is especially nice in the summer when we have the doors open," she says. The kitchen breakfast room, which can also be accessed from the hall, has doors on to the garden and leads through to the boot room, which then gives on to the dining room. There is also a ground-floor cloakroom and utility room. "We have two boys and have enjoyed all this reception space," he explains. "It means we have the family room, where they can play and we can all spend time together, and then the drawing room for more formal occasions."


Upstairs, three of the bedrooms are situated on the first floor, where each has its own en-suite bathroom or shower room. "We always have plenty of space for guests to stay with us," she observes. The master bedroom, with its dressing area, is especially sumptuous. "I love having such a spacious bedroom," she admits. "I often work from home and having this room means I can go off into my own space for some quiet time." Two more bedrooms are located on the second floor of the house, where they share a bathroom. "The boys are up here and, again, like all the room they have for spreading out all their toys."


One of the great pleasures of life at Firgrove has been the opportunities for outdoor living. "We love entertaining here when the weather is warm, sitting outside with friends and family and having barbecues," he says. The other owner adds: "We have a small pond outside, which is beautiful in the summer when the lilies are out. There is also space out there for the boys to have their football goals and trampolines, and we have a shed at the back where we have a table tennis table. We spend as much time as we can outside when the weather is fine."

Setting the Scene
The house is set on a secure, gated development of just three houses, which is on a private cul-de-sac. It benefits from off-road parking and a double garage. To the rear, it opens on to a good-sized family garden, with decked areas for outside dining and entertaining, as well as space for children to play.
On sunny days, they enjoy heading down to the Thames to stroll by the river or over to Sonning Eye or Dorney Lake. "We are close to lots of lovely places to walk or go to the park," she says. "At the same time, however, I can drive to the station in five minutes and be at London Paddington by train in 20 to 25 minutes. The schools here are excellent and good shops are within easy reach." She adds: "We will miss this area a great deal when we relocate. Finding a home like this, with so much space, the security of the gate and in such a wonderful place is very rare indeed. We know how lucky we are to have lived here."
