6 Bedroom detached house Lamarsh Road, Alphamstone £1,300,000

Impressive Oak House has an immaculate interior and sits within 1.45 acres of its own glorious grounds, surrounded by spectacular open countryside

Nestled in the glorious countryside of the Stour Valley, the vendors have found Oak House to be a simply magnificent family home for the past 16 years. The beautiful six-bedroom, four-bathroom house sits within approximately 1.50 acres of its own splendid grounds, offering the very best of indoor and outdoor living.
Yet at the same time, one of the owners points out, it is just a five-minute drive from Sudbury and 20 minutes from Colchester – and from there it is possible to catch a train into London Liverpool Street in just 50 minutes.
“It was the overwhelming sense of space and light that struck my husband first,” she recalls. “But he also couldn’t believe it was possible to have a house with so much comfort, in such an idyllic rural position, yet be just five minutes' drive from a railway station.”

Oak House was built 35 years ago and its design sits easily within the picturesque Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surrounding it.
“It is a phenomenal house – it has suited our family so well in every way,” she says. “I can remember coming from Bures to our village of Alphamstone for the very first time and feeling like I was driving through heaven,” she remembers. “Now, even after living here for all these years, I can honestly say that I never tire of those views. Whatever the time of year, they are food for the soul.”

Over the years, the owners have enhanced Oak House, giving considerable thought to every detail and ensuring work was finished to the highest quality.
“We added a porch, which has proved to be a fantastic addition: it looks so homely at Christmas with fairy lights and greenery decorating the oak,” she says. “We upgraded the bathrooms; added under-floor heating and took down a wall to enlarge our kitchen into the excellent space it is now. This is such a lovely family room, is an absolute joy to cook in and has become the place for our parties to start.”

The substantial property has been ideal for the family of six and for children of different ages.
“At the moment my youngest daughter is really into dancing and gymnastics, and loves having a bedroom large enough to practice in; my youngest son particularly likes the family room, which has space for his Scalextric track,” she says.
“My husband loves the large drawing room and the study from which we can both easily work. He likes waking up in our spacious bedroom too and the convenience of having such a large en suite bathroom and wardrobe room.”
Her eldest son has recently moved out but relished the independence of the annexe accommodation above the garage, where there is a bedroom, sitting room and shower room: “My eldest daughter loved luxuriating in the family bathroom and now enjoys spending time in the kitchen, where we often bake together at the weekends. I also think my favourite room must be the kitchen, with views of the surrounding garden from each and every window.”

Despite its size, the house is always homely and welcoming. It flows well and has been an incredible place to entertain.
“It just absorbs people,” she observes. “We have had a marquee in the garden for the youngest children’s christening; large garden parties to celebrate a golden wedding anniversary, and 18th and 21st birthdays. Christmas is effortless here, no matter what the numbers, despite some pretty huge Christmas trees that I put up every year!”

The family is now relocating and everyone is as sad to be leaving the surrounding area as they are the house. It is easy to get to schools, shops and places of work – and the town of Sudbury has everything they need on a daily basis.
“There is so much to do here, from the lovely riverboat ride that runs between Sudbury and the local riverside gastro pub, to Daws Hall Nature Reserve, which is just a short walk away, and Colchester Castle.”
She adds: “People travel to this part of the world because it is just so wonderful. There is a walk we lik

Oak House is located in the rolling countryside of the Stour Valley between and within easy reach of the attractive sought after village of Bures and the market town of Sudbury, which has more than adequate day to day shopping facilities. The market town of Sudbury lies approximately 5 miles away to the north and Colchester 10 miles to the south. The A12 which give access to London, Ipswich and Norwich is located approximately 7 miles away while a train from Colchester Station takes around 50 minutes into central London.
