6 Bedroom detached house Bungay £545,000

This attractive, three-storey character home offers substantial accommodation, a superb market town position and far-reaching views across the Waveney Valley

From the top of the garden at their Suffolk home, the owners of Hillside House look straight out across the valley. Set in the colourful market town of Bungay, their three-storey character home sits in beautiful, mature gardens. "It is a real sun-trap here and the grounds are full of all sorts of birds, butterflies and dragonflies," one of them explains. "From the top of the garden and the upstairs landing there are views over the Waveney Valley. We also see the most beautiful sunsets, with the sky turning all manner of different colours and tones."

A HOME WITH HISTORY
Dating back in part to 1874, with a newer section added in 1914, the six-bedroom property has a fascinating history. "There was a water mill behind us at one time and this used to produce all the water for the whole town," he explains. "In more recent times, the house has been run as a bed and breakfast." Moving back to the Norfolk and Suffolk border area, which is known for its beauty and proximity to both the spectacular coast and famous Broads, the couple were drawn to Bungay. "We wanted to move to a market town and Bungay had everything we needed," he recalls. "We liked the size of this house and loved the garden."
IMMACULATE INTERIOR
As soon as they bought the attractive home, the pair embarked upon a programme of renovation and modernisation. "We did everything from replacing the roof, windows and wiring to opening it up in places, laying new flooring and under-floor heating, and having a new Worcester Bosch boiler and central heating system installed." Bathrooms and kitchen were also replaced and a wood-burning stove was brought in. The whole house was redecorated. "Everything has been done to a high standard for a comfortable home ready to move into."
ALL SEASONS
This handsome house offers generous living space. At ground floor level it is entered via a hall leading to a bright dining room or study, with a large window providing plenty of natural light. This in turn leads on to the very spacious drawing room, where two rooms have been opened up creating one great area. A door from the drawing room leads into the conservatory, where French windows lead in to the garden. "The drawing room is lovely in winter, when we light the wood-burning stove - this is a very calm place," he says. "In warmer weather we like to sit in the conservatory, looking out on to the garden and watching the birds."
GREAT SPACE
Towards the back of the house, the kitchen, family or breakfast room, utility room, cloakroom, and games room or gym can be found. The games room has been a great bonus to the family. "We spend a lot of time in here playing games and using the equipment. It is a very light space due to the skylight windows and would be ideal as an artist's studio or officer perhaps," Upstairs, four bedrooms and the family bathroom are on the first floor: one of the bedrooms has an en suite shower room. Two more bedrooms, including another with an en suite shower room, are situated on the second floor. "We have lots of room here to have people to stay - we often have family down from Yorkshire," he says. "It is also a great place for entertaining because of the flow between the different rooms on the ground floor. At Christmas we have 16 people in the house and there is still plenty of room."
CENTRAL LOCATION
On fine days the owners spend as much time as possible in the garden, enjoying the treehouse, the colourful tulips and hydrangeas, and the many places to sit and soak up the sunshine. "We also like going for walks from here or heading off to places such as Beccles, the coast at Dunwich or North Norfolk," he says. "We can get into Norwich easily and there are trains to London from Brampton and Beccles, taking approximately two hours." Bustling Bungay has a good range of shops, supermarkets and schools, he adds. "Everything we need is within walking distance and yet we also have these wonderful valley views and can go walking in the beautiful countryside."
SETTING THE SCENE
Hillside House benefits from a shingled driveway to the front. There is a large garage where the current owners keep their boat. To the rear, the beautiful mature garden is tiered, offering places to sit out in the sunshine and for children to play. There is a summerhouse and a treehouse, plus two garden sheds.
