As the owners of Hill House overlook their glorious, mature garden, they think back to how it appeared, when they first moved in many years ago, and the transformation their home has undergone in the meantime.
"When we first viewed it, we just saw the potential the property had for us as a family: it had the downstairs reception rooms that we needed in addition to a large garden for our children," explains one of them.
Hill House, originally built in the early 1950's, is now the perfect family home, with a simply magnificent garden. It offers a bright interior, finished with subtly beautiful decorative details, and is a versatile living space in a convenient location.
"We've made changes to create a versatile, cosy and comfortable home."

The gardens and grounds of Hill House are a special feature having been landscaped and extensively replanted by the present owners and divided into sections. Numerous specimen trees surround the two ponds including a Catalpa, Fuji Cherry, Robinia, Liquidamber, Gingko and a Tulip Tree. The orchard is extensively planted with several varieties of cooking and eating apple, plum and quince whilst the two pergolas are clad in honeysuckle and roses.

THE PERFECT PLACE

After moving into their new home, the couple updated everything: they installed new bathrooms, replaced and re-routed water pipes in the garden and installed a bespoke kitchen with a beautiful three oven gas Aga for the winter and electric Aga module with a gas hob for the summer. They also added a conservatory onto the rear of the house and put their own stamp on the interior redecoration. We have also replaced two open fires with wood burners to give the rooms that feeling of cosiness on a cold winter's day.
"We've decided to capitalise on the character of the house," one of them says. "Although it's not an old house, it still has many lovely features, which we've tried to emphasise in our decoration of the beautiful archways in the hall and brought solid oak into the kitchen to tie in with the beautifully crafted solid oak doors and bookcases in the downstairs reception rooms".
"The colour scheme is very cosy," she adds. "We used materials of a high quality, such as the Fired Earth paints and tiles in the bathrooms and kitchen in addition to high quality appliances."

INSIDE OUT

The garden was also transformed into an ideal setting for entertaining and relaxing.
"I'm a garden designer so I redesigned the garden myself," the owner says. "I wanted to have colour all year round, so I set about changing the planting, adding another pond with a waterfall and specimen trees and shrubs to enhance spring blossom and autumn colour. Above all, the garden is the setting for a variety of events: "We use it all summer long for entertaining: the children used it for inviting their friends for swimming and tennis, our church used it for barbecues and, in the past, the cubs and beavers, have used it for their swimming badges. All of our children have had their 18th or 21st birthdays in the pool house, and most years we have a bonfire party. It's an excellent house for entertaining."

LIFE AT HOME

For the owners, the most important aspect of living in Hill House is the ease provided by its space.
"All of the rooms in the house work well. If you're a large family, there are still many different spaces and everyone can have some privacy. I use the sitting room to do needlework and my designs; my husband has his own study; there's a drawing room with a television but there's more space to relax in the conservatory as well."
Formerly, the owners used one of the bedrooms as an upstairs playroom.
"When the children were young they had sleepovers, played manhunt continuously in the garden and they had their own space without feeling that we were watching them all the time," she adds. "It's a real family home since everyone has the space to do what they want."

Within the village, shops cater for everyday needs including a Cooperative store, post office, public houses, a doctor's surgery and a primary school. The primary school is located at the heart of the village and organises many activities to entertain the local children. A good selection of secondary and private schools in Colchester are all within easy reach also. On the doorstep there is access to a host of quiet country lanes you can pick up on one of the Cycle Essex routes or just follow your own. Maybe even wander over the border into Suffolk for the delights of Constable Country, or perhaps to track the River Colne.
WITHIN EASY REACH
Colchester town itself offers a variety of national retailers and specialist shops and has a vibrant nightlife with restaurants catering for most tastes, plus a multi screen cinema and two theatres.
