4 Bedroom barn conversion Waterhouse Close, Newport Pagnell £580,000

Built in the style of a traditional barn, with spectacular living space and individual features, the house on Waterhouse Close is in an excellent location

Relaxing beside a roaring log fire in their capacious drawing room, the owners of the house on Waterhouse Close savor the space and flexibility their unique home. Built in the 1990s, the unusual property mirrored the old stable block or barn which stood on the site for many years. “We understand the old building was taken down and that this was rebuilt in its image,” one of them explains. “The work was carried out with great attention to detail – the slate for the roof was cut by hand on site, for example.” It was the impressive style of the property that first caught the attention of the couple six years ago. “It has the personality and character of an old barn,” she explains. “When we saw the inglenook fireplace, which looks like it is made from reclaimed bricks from the original barn – and the open fire in it – we absolutely knew that this was where we wanted to live.”

STYLISH KITCHEN
The two-storey property offers well-proportioned living and sleeping accommodation. It is entered via a porch and then central entrance hall leading to the kitchen breakfast room, cloakroom, study and utility room to one side. The kitchen breakfast room is an excellent space, with solid oak wall and base units with granite work surfaces. There is also a Belfast sink and beautiful Italian tile floor. “We had the kitchen replaced by a company called The Freestanding Kitchen Company as we wanted the flexibility to be able to rearrange it if necessary – and we have already enjoyed being able to do so.”
WELCOMING FRIENDS
At the other end of the ground floor, the hall leads to a dining room and then the splendid, double-aspect drawing room. “This fantastic room is where we spend most of our time,” she admits. “It is such a large space that it has been a dining room as well as a drawing room in the past. We have had some amazing parties in here, especially at Christmas, when the fire is lit. There is always plenty of space for everyone to gather and for children to play, as well as a lovely tree.” French windows from the drawing room open on to the enclosed garden, which has been landscaped by the current owners. “This has also been a great place for family parties and barbecues. It catches the sunshine through most of the day but also offers areas of shade, which works well for us.”
BRIGHT BEDROOMS
All four bedrooms fitted with electric Velux blinds throughout are situated on the first floor of the barn-style home. The master bedroom, which has an en suite bathroom, is especially large. “This room really stands out as it runs the full width of the house,” she explains. “It is always very light as it has so many windows.” The remaining three bedrooms share the family bathroom.
FRESH INTERIOR
The whole house has been well maintained by the owners. “We have redecorated throughout and had new bathrooms fitted and a Karndean floor laid,” she says. “We wanted the interior to enhance the character of the house while also ensuring the home was cosy and welcoming, and that everything flowed well from one room to the next. We have kept all the rooms fairly fresh and neutral, bringing some textured paint into the drawing room to bring something a little different to the space.” The house is a peaceful place to live and the garden provides great privacy. “It is so nice to be able to live somewhere like this and yet to be within walking distance of the high street, where we can get everything we need,” she admits. “We are in an older part of town and yet we have parking for two cars and a garage.”
TOWN LIFE
Newport Pagnell is an active place, with lots of annual events including a carnival, fireworks and Soapbox Derby. “It is also very quick to get to Milton Keynes, with all its shopping, leisure and sports facilities, as well as more community activities,” she says. “We can walk to the park from here or to the meadow by the river.” It is easy to pick up the motorway or to reach the train station for those who need to commute into London or travel to other parts of the country. “We have really enjoyed living here and are sorry to be relocating for reasons of work,” she adds. “We will miss being this close to town and yet living somewhere so private and spacious.”
SETTING THE SCENE
The property on Waterhouse close benefits from a driveway to one side, which leads to parking for one or two vehicles; there is also a garage. The property opens on to an immaculate, landscaped, enclosed rear garden. This includes terrace areas for outside dining, as well as a lawn.
