4 Bedroom bungalow Water End, Maulden £835,000

Set in large grounds, with an abundance of space, the bungalow at Water End holds huge potential for all sorts of lifestyle opportunities, as well as the chance to be close to nature

When she was a child, she would pick fruit and vegetables in the garden, collect eggs from the hens and climb trees to her heart’s content. The much-loved bungalow at Water End, Maulden, has been in the family for almost 40 years now. The current owner spent much of her time as a child there and has memories of happy times playing in its sizeable grounds. “It was built by my grandparents back in 1988,” she recalls. “I think they chose it because it was such a big plot and it gave them the opportunity to build a large house. They loved spending time outside – they kept animals, such as geese and chickens – and there was a brook at the end of the garden. I spent every weekend there when I was growing up. I loved to walk down to the water to feed the swans.”

SUPERB SPACE
The generous bungalow sits in approximately 0.5 acres of mature grounds where it offers single-storey accommodation. It is currently arranged with four bedrooms and two bathrooms, but there is scope for reconfiguration. It has a detached double, brick-built garage. “It is ready for someone to move straight into but, equally, new owners may wish to put their own stamp on it. There are all sorts of possibilities for reconfiguration. Subject to the relevant planning permissions, there is plenty of space for extension as well.” The property has been well maintained and cared for over the years. “The rooms are a good size and could be used in all sorts of different ways,” she adds. “My grandparents chose to use one bedroom as a study.”
HOME COMFORTS
Set well back and with substantial off-road parking, the well-proportioned bungalow is entered from the front via a covered porch and central hallway. To the left, there is a family bathroom, and, from the hall, there is access to good storage. The kitchen breakfast room is to the right of the hall, and is a good-sized room, with plenty of space for a table and chairs. It opens into a bedroom, plus the utility room, which in turn leads to a family shower room and into the garden. “There is a pantry in the kitchen where my gran would keep all the jam, piccalilli and many other things she made,” the owner remembers. “Everything was always homemade. We would go outside to dig up vegetables and pick fruit, then come inside to cook together. I would gather eggs and we would bake cakes in the Aga.”
WINTER WARMING
Double doors from the hall open into the capacious sitting and dining room. This has windows that look out over the beautiful garden and towards the leafy trees. There is ample room for comfortable seating, dining furniture and even a corner workspace, should that be required. “We had so many happy times in here too,” she says. “My grandad and I would go outside to chop wood for the open fire and there would always be a real tree in here at Christmas. Everyone would gather together to open their presents.” There could be scope, perhaps to add a garden room. “Equally, new owners may also wish to consider installing bi-folding doors to be able to open this room right up onto the garden in summer – I have often thought that would be nice.”
FLEXIBLE LIVING
The master bedroom, which sits to the front of the bungalow and has a bay window, is especially large. There could be space here to add an en suite shower room if required. Two more bedrooms in this wing of the house overlook the back garden. The final bedroom is the one next to the kitchen. This has a dual aspect. “This was the bedroom that was used as a study and I have many happy memories of drawing and painting in there.” This room could have a variety of other uses too. It could make a great snug, den or children’s playroom.
HAPPY TIMES
The rural location has also gave the family great pleasure over the years. They would head off on long country walks. There are woods and nature reserves close by. “It is such a beautiful, relaxing place to be and yet it is also easy to reach Milton Keynes, Bedford, Luton and even London,” she said. “You can get to supermarkets and there are pubs and a shop in the village.” She adds: “This is also a great place for anyone who wants to keep a horse as there are stables nearby. I loved being here – it is a real family home and I can imagine other families being here too. It is a wonderful place to raise children.”
SETTING THE SCENE
The bungalow at Water End nestles in mature, well-screened gardens of approximately 0.5 acres. There is ample space for off-road parking, plus a detached double garage.
