Designing your dream bedroom

The bedroom is not only the space in which we sleep, but also where we go for an escape. Do you feel your bedroom lacks the associated qualities of calmness and relaxation? If so read on!

A lot of high-end hotels spend a pretty penny designing bedrooms that both look and feel great when sleeping in them. Interior designers draw inspiration from these hotel bedrooms for their own rooms to achieve that sought after combination of space, beauty and relaxation. Therefore taking some time to ensure you have a practical and efficient plan for your bedroom is paramount.

Control the clutter

Serenity can’t be achieved in a messy bedroom. Consider adding extra storage items, such as cabinets, to help control clutter better. If you can’t spare the space for extra storage, consider shelving to your wardrobe/walls, storage drawers under the bed or baskets for smaller items. Everything being stored in its rightful place is the first step to achieving serenity and relaxation.

Select the best colours

The colours you choose should depend on the layout of the bedroom along with the overall atmosphere you want to create.

  • Shades of red will make a cold room feel warmer
  • Shades of blue and green will make a room feel cooler, especially if your room attracts a lot of natural light.
  • Shades like pale lilacs and soft plums are fresher alternatives for both cold and warn rooms as they sits between the cool and warm hues on a colour wheel.
  • Darker shades, such as navy and forest green evoke a feeling of romance within a smaller bedroom. Don’t go overboard otherwise it will feel too small and dark!

Eradicate noise

If you live on a busy road or have noisy neighbours you may find it hard to sleep on a regular basis. To beat this, implement thicker fabrics and textiles in your bedroom to help sound-proofing; examples being fitted carpets and underlay and layered window treatments. You could also install a ceiling fan to turn on during the hotter nights; the whirring blades will help block out external noise even further.

Survey the space

Take some time to study the size of the bedroom and what you’ll be able to fit in it. A bigger bed means sacrificing space for other things to supplement it such as a chest of drawers and nightstands. When furniture hunting, select objects that will fit into your bedroom nicely, depending on how much space is at your disposal. Ensure you plan well in advance so you get everything you need.

Treat yourself!

Why not spoil yourself with a little luxury for your bedroom, like quality bed linens or pillows? Extra linens and pillows on a bed make it go from boring to luxury in an instant.

Light it up

Lighting can often make all the difference. Ambient lighting is a good choice for those who want to control the level of light within their bedroom, which can really change the atmosphere and mood as you’re settling down for the night. It can be installed through a ceiling fixture, as well as a bedside lamp and low-voltage ceiling lights. Install a dimmer switch so you can control the level of lighting at your own convenience.
