The Story
Returning home to Oak Dene after a busy day out, Teresa appreciates the tranquillity and sense of country living her home offers. With fields to the front and back, it is not unusual to spot wildlife and yet the newly renovated property is less than 1 mile from Holyport, with its shops, eateries and sought-after schools, and is well placed for anyone seeking to be able to commute into London or travel to other parts of the country. “This house is very nicely situated,” she agrees. “It is lovely to have fields all around and yet to be able to get to everything you need so quickly. It is in a fabulous area if you are someone who enjoys stepping straight out and heading off on beautiful walks, perhaps stopping at a friendly, country pub along the way.” There is a studio outside that could be ideal as a home office.
FAMILY HOME
Dating back to the mid-50s, the property, which sits in a good-sized, mature plot, was originally single storey. It had already been given an upper level by the time Teresa and her husband saw it and since then they have further extended it, while also renovating it to transform it into the superb home it is today. “As soon as we saw it, we knew what we wanted to do with it,” she admits. “We could see it held potential to become a fantastic family home or perhaps somewhere for a couple with visiting children or grandchildren.”
WORK OR PLAY
By weaving their magic, they have created a bright, comfortable and easy-living home. Oak Dene also provides exceptional flexibility. “We extended out to the side and opened the house up,” she explains. “We altered the layout, had a new kitchen and bathrooms fitted and a new heating system and boiler installed. The whole house was rewired and redecorated and the garage was given a new roof.” They also decided to add a garden studio. “This could have a variety of uses,” she suggests. “It could be an excellent office for anyone wishing to work from home or it could be ideal for leisure or hobby purposes. It could also make a great teenagers’ den.”
BEAUTIFUL BEDROOMS
Entered via a central hallway, Oak Dene has been cleverly designed with its ground-floor sleeping accommodation to one side. Here there are two double bedrooms, each with a large window to bring the light pouring in. There is also a family bathroom in this section of the house. Stairs from the hall lead up to the first floor, where another gorgeous, airy double bedroom, a shower room and walk-in cupboard are situated. This whole floor has become a magnificent master suite. “This is a very nice room: it is lovely and light because of the skylight windows. While it is perfect as a master bedroom, it could also be an outstanding guest suite for older owners who might prefer to sleep downstairs,” Teresa says.
SPACIOUS LIVING
To the left of the reception hall is the wonderful new open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. This is accessed via the kitchen which has been designed for practicality as well as style and features a central island. The kitchen area is open to the dining or breakfast space, where there are French windows on to the garden. “I like spending time in this part of the house because it is double aspect and in the summer you can have the doors while you are cooking or dining.” The dining area flows into the huge sitting room space, where two more sets of French windows give on to the garden. There is ample room in here for comfortable seating, as well as for children to play. “This is a great place for a family to spend time together or for entertaining,” she adds. Leading off the main living space, Teresa has created another room that could be a study, snug or children’s playroom. It could also be an additional, ground-floor bedroom. “Our aim was to create a home that offered great flexibility, enabling people to use it in various ways at different times as their requirements changed.”
READY AND WAITING
The south-facing garden has been landscaped. It features a lawn, terrace and some flower beds but, like the house, is essentially ready for new owners to move in and make their mark on. The property has been finished to a high standard, with neutral decor so new owners can add touches of their own colours via furniture and furnishings. The space around the house and the long garage may well offer the opportunity for further extension in the future. “This is a lovely area to live in and the house itself is perfect,” Teresa adds. “We know that whoever comes here after us will enjoy it as much as we have done.”
SETTING THE SCENE
To the front of Oak Dene there is a driveway with space for several cars to the park. To the rear, the house opens on to a family garden with a lawn, terrace and leafy surroundings offering great privacy.
